Earlier today a client and I got talking about painful heel cracks.  I told her about the success I have personally had using castor oil.  It reminded me that this remedy is in my book Herbal Medicine for Health and Well-Being (Sterling 2004).  Since that book is in limited supply, I thought I would share what I wrote here.

“Castor oil is thick and beautifully healing to dried cracked skin.  I recently had a very painful crack in my heel that made it extremely difficult for my foot to bear weight.  I put castor oil on a large adhesive bandage and put it over the heel crack.  I covered the bandage with a sock and went to bed.  In the morning, the heel was much less painful and I could put weight on it and walk almost completely normally.  I continued to use the castor oil bandage under my sock day and night.  Within 3 days, the crack was completely healed.”

As you can read in my post on Healthy Sodas, I just returned from my summer vacation.  In addition to the family reunion, my husband and I went on a backpacking trip in the Trinity Alps of Northern California.  We were surrounded by absolute stunning beauty that positively and powerfully shifted my disposition.

We found that a few health and wellness products were easy to take with us and were a real essential part of our experience.  I thought I would tell you about them here as they may also support you in having a great summer.

The combination of hot weather and physical activity can deplete the body of essential electrolytes that support  proper hydration.  Re-hydrating or maintaining hydration is best accomplished with more than just plain water.  The lacto-fermented beverages that I mention in my article on Healthy Sodas is a great way to support proper hydration, but not always practical.

Far more convenient, are product powders that you can simply add to water.  Here are some of my favorites due to their high quality ingredients and absence of chemical colorings or preservatives.

First is Want more Energy by Isagenix.  This is an electrolyte replacement drink that comes in convenient individual-sized serving packets that can easily be added to a glass or bottle of water.  We relied heavily on this on our trip into the wilderness. My favorite is the citrus flavor which is a yummy lemon-lime.

We love to stop for lunch when hiking or backpacking and combine a pack of citrus Want More Energy with a scoop of Isagenix Greens.  The combination feels doubly re-hydrating and satisfying.

The Isagenix Greens is a way to get the equivalent of 10 servings of vegetables in a delicious, easy to prepare beverage.  Since backpacking with the ingredients to make a great-big salad would be difficult, we count on the greens to keep us covered.

The final product that we really appreciated on our trip was the Isagenix powdered Ionix Supreme.  Ionix Supreme is sometimes called “The Rejuvenator”.  It is packed with nutritious herbs that replenish the body’s electrolytes after physical exertion as well as promoting strength, stamina, and restful sleep.

On our trip we used Ionix Supreme as a hot beverage first thing in the morning, and as a kind-of dessert/after-dinner-drink before bed.  We had some of our best ever night’s of sleep out under the stars!

Healthy Sodas!

I just returned from a really fun family reunion at Lake Tahoe.  It was fabulous in every way.  In addition to hiking, biking, hanging out at the beach and taking a speedboat ride, one of the ways we had fun together was preparing food.

To accompany our meals I had brought along some of my homemade root beer to share and was so happy to see that people seemed to really enjoy it!  Here is the recipe for anyone interested in making some themselves.  I found this recipe in the book Full Moon Feast by Jessica Prentice.

The first step is to make a ginger bug.  This will act as a “culture” for the root beer.  Take a pint sized jar ( I find the ones with two-part lids work best) and add 1 cup of water.  Add 2 tespoons of white sugar and 2 teaspoons of grated (or chopped) fresh ginger.  Put on the lid and shake then set the jar in a warm place.  The next day add the same amount of ginger and sugar and shake and return to the warm spot (I just keep mine on the kitchen counter where I will see it).  Repeat this process everyday until it starts to bubble.  This takes anywhere from 3 days to one week.

Now you are ready to make the root beer.  Place 2 tablespoons dried sassafras (the bark of the root) and 1 tablespoon dried licorice root (these are available at natural food stores or online) in a large pot and add 1 quart filterd water.  Bring to a simmer and cover for 20 minutes.  Then turn off the heat and leave covered for about half an hour.

Pour 1/3 cup birch syrup ( I use agave nectar just because I haven’t yet acquired birch syrup) and 1/3 cup sugar (you can use a whole sugar like Rapadura or Sucanat here) into a 2 quart mason jar and strain the still-hot herbal mixture over the syrup/sugar combo.  Stir or wisk to dissolve.

Next add another quart of filtered water and stir to combine.  Touch the liquid with your finger.  It should feel warm to the touch but not hot.  Add the ginger bug (you can also add a few kefir grains or  1 cup whey), screw on the lid, and leave in a warm place for 2-4 days.

Strain into class bottles with screw tops.  Screw the lids on tightly, label and date the bottle, and return to the warm place for 2 more days.  Then transfer to the fridge.  Once they are cold you can drink them anytime.  When you are ready to drink them, open the bottles carefully as they may have built up quite a bit of carbonation.

Why is this good for you? This process is called lacto-fermentation and has been used by diverse cultures ranging from Russian, to South American, Ethiopian, Korean, Zambian, Mexican and more.  The process preserves a large array of enzymes and beneficial bacteria while producing only a small amount of alcohol.

The formation of lactic acid in this process is valued for its ability to support healthy digestion, lactation, and an improved sense of well-being and stamina.  These beverages are also seen to be superior to plain water in quenching thirst after physical activity.

Modern day root beer and ginger ale are familiar sodas that were at one time traditionally fermented, but are now produced in such a way that they lack enzymes and are high in sugar, caffeine, chemicals, and artificial ingredients.

What’s next? I planted a Lemon Verbena bush in my garden this year and am looking forward to making a lacto-fermanted Lemon Verbena Ale!

I am very excited about the launch of Seaside Cleanse Camps (for details visit the Cleanse Camp Tab above).  In a recent email from my partner in this endeavor, she described it as an opportunity to:

  1. Go to the beach.
  2. Do nothing except RELAX, cleanse, LEARN, laugh, stretch, meet new people and perhaps make new friends.
  3. Be ABLE to talk FREELY to a naturopathic physician in a RELAXED and UNHURRIED setting
  4. Not cook
  5. Not clean

“ALL for a reasonable price….and a steal compared to OTHER programs that are out there.”

The Nutritional Cleansing tool that will be shared and experienced has so many benefits. It is often promoted as a weight-loss tool.  Really, it is a healthy lifestyle tool with a side benefit of very effective, long lasting weight loss.

Some of the other benefits experienced by cleansers are equally life changing. More energy, better sleep, improved moods, freedom from cravings, and more.

A client of mine who just finished a 9-day cleanse was so amazed at how much her moods had improved.  Prior to the cleanse she felt deeply distressed with situations in her life.  She did the cleanse hoping to gain the energy to deal with these situations.  Post cleanse,  she no longer sees that there are distressing situations that need to be dealt with.  Wow!

I talk frequently about the benefits of cleansing the body of impurities. Our bodies were designed with elegant systems for taking things in from our environment, processing them into nutrients that we can use, and eliminating the wastes. Unfortunately in our modern world we encounter more impurities then our body can keep up with.

The build-up of toxins in the body has been associated with many diseases including obesity. While the benefits of cleansing may mean prevention of some of these diseases, it has been shown time and time again to improve energy, mental clarity, sleep, and general sense of well-being.

What I sometimes forget is what might come to mind when the word “cleanse” is used. And while the concept may sound like a good idea – the prospect may be frightening.

When some hear the word “cleanse” they think “colon cleanse” and that they might have to keep themselves within easy access of the restroom. The cleanse I promote is not a colon cleanse, but a full body cellular cleanse. The process encourages the cells of the body to release toxins that it may be storing.

The second fear I encounter is ” I can’t go without eating”. Going without eating is not necessarily a cleanse but a fast and may defeat the purpose of ridding the body of impurities. How is that you ask? The body needs nutrients to accomplish its own natural detoxification processes. It is these processes that a cleanse should support. A body that is already nutrient deprived (from eating foods that are calorie rich and nutrient poor) may not be able to perform the function of detoxification which requires specific nutrients. So the most important part of the cleanse I promote is not what you take out, but what you put in.

Another fear is that the cleanser will feel weak and tired and unable to keep up with their busy schedule or regular exercise routine. Quite the contrary. Most people who do the nutritional cleanse that I promote in my office find that their energy increases – usually quite dramatically. Rather than feeling tired, they find they wake up in the morning easily, feeling well rested and have good clear energy through the day. Regarding muscle weakness – this is one of the reasons I switched to the nutritional cleansing program I now promote.

Until last year I used a program by a very well respected company that supplies products exclusively to physicians. I thought it was the absolute best. It was a three week cleansing program, and by the third week many cleansers mentioned that they were feeling muscle weakness. The muscle weakness means that they had begun to breakdown lean tissue. The Isagenix program I now use is designed specifically to preserve or even build lean tissue – there is not typically any muscle wasting or weakness.

Another fear I encounter is the idea that you will have to take something that tastes really disgusting!!!! The Isagenix nutritional cleansing products taste great! Really. Even kids like them. This is another reason that I switched to this product line is the great taste of the products and ease of the program make it really doable for anyone! This program allows you to enter where you are, eat the foods you like and are familiar with and still have great success. These products taste so great and feel so great in the body most cleansers want to make them a part of their ongoing healthy lifestyle.

Lastly, the Isagenix program can be modified to meet your needs. This is why it is recommended that you work with a coach rather than doing the cleanse on your own. The coach will assess your needs and help you determine the approach to cleansing that meets you right where you are.

If this has helped to allay some of your fears then the next step is to follow the three action items below:

1 – Listen to a 20 minute recorded call that is available 24/7 that describes the cleanse in perfect detail. Listening to this call is analogous to attending on of my talks. The number to call is 1-641-715-3900 code 2657619#.

2 – Go to www.drlauraw.isagenix.com to take a look at the products.

3 – Call me at 503-471-1533 or send an email to doc@laurawashington.com so I can help you choose the right plan for you and make sure you get the very best prices.

Earlier this week a client leaving my office said “I love coming in here and feel so much better when I leave, but I really have no idea what it is that you do”.  This client had just received a BodyTalk session, and her not being clear about how it works is very understandable.

BodyTalk is a form of energy medicine, or as the founder of the system Dr. John Veltheim describes it, consciousness-based medicine.  Founded on the principles of quantum physics, it is a system that uses neuromuscular feedback from the body and light tapping on the head and sternum to re-establish the body’s channels of communication and to focus its self-healing.

I use it as part of my naturopathic practice because it is the very least invasive therapy I have yet come across, and because it can address some of the underlying contributors to imbalance that are otherwise difficult or even impossible to address.

The BodyTalk System not only addresses the body’s physiology, but also the role our life experiences, our thoughts, and our beliefs play in our overall health and state of well-being.  I will write more about this process in the future, but for right now I want to share this link to videos on The BodyTalk System so that you can learn more.  http://www.bodytalksystem.com/videos/

Water!

One of my naturopathic clients just asked me a question about water.  It lead to an interesting discussion that I want to write about here.  Water is essential to the survival of everything on this planet and in the human body.

Water plays many significant roles in the body including transmission of nerve impulses and neurotransmitters (like the feel-good brain chemicals), efficient activity of protein and enzymes, sugar metabolism, the immune system, and the body’s detoxification pathways.

Every 24 hours the body recycles the equivalent of forty thousand glasses of water to maintain normal physiological functions.  Within this process, the body becomes short about 8-10 glasses of water each day.  This deficit must be supplied to the body each day.  On average, the body needs upwards of half its weight in ounces of water per day – a minimum of 8-10 glasses.

Some people find that drinking water doesn’t really quench their thirst or it doesn’t taste good.  Perhaps this is due to the quality of the water.  Many people are aware that tap water can contain many impurities.  Our water is impacted by pollutants in the air and ground as well as those from manufacturing plants.

Municipal water treats these impurities with harsh chemicals such as chlorine.  To avoid all of these toxic substances many people drink filtered and purified water, and others drink bottled water.  Filtration and purification do not address all of the toxins in our water, and at least 25% of bottled water is simply processed municipal water.

One of the effects of these impurities in water is they cause it to have an acidic pH. Drinking acidic water contributes to acidity in our bodies which is a state that allows for health problems to arise.

To address this issue I recommend to my naturopathic clients the use of Isawater, an alkalinized water concentrate.  Not only does Isawater create a healthier pH in the body, it carries a negative charge which helps to neutralize damaging free radicals.

I find that Isawater diminishes the harsh taste of treated or polluted water giving it a far more pleasant taste.  It is available on my Isagenix website if you want to give it a try.
